If you wanted to apply for GATE 2027 but missed the regular deadline, don’t panic. IIT Madras, which is organising the exam this year, still has an extended window open. This guide explains what you need to do, how much it will cost, and what to expect from the exam itself.
Where things stand today
The online application opened on 27 August 2026. The regular deadline was 5 October 2026. If you missed it, you can still submit your form until 12 October 2026 by paying an extra fee.
Boards sometimes shift their dates, so check the notice page on the official website before you pay anything: gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
Key dates
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Application opens | 27 August 2026 |
| Regular deadline | 5 October 2026 |
| Extended deadline (late fee) | 12 October 2026 |
| Exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 |
| Result | 19 March 2027 |
How much will you pay?
The fee is charged per paper, so the total changes if you choose more than one paper. The late fee adds ₹500 on top of the regular fee in both categories.
| Category | Regular fee | Late fee period |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC | ₹2,000 | ₹2,500 |
| Female / SC / ST / PwD | ₹1,000 | ₹1,500 |
A quick example: Say a General category student applies late for two papers. That is ₹2,500 × 2 = ₹5,000. A female candidate applying late for the same two papers pays ₹1,500 × 2 = ₹3,000.
Before you decide to add a second paper, ask yourself whether you can really prepare for both. Many students pick two papers and then focus on only one.
Payment can be made online through net banking, a debit or credit card, or UPI.
Please confirm the final amounts in the official brochure. Fees can change between exam cycles.
Who can apply?
There is no age limit, either minimum or maximum. What matters is your education.
You can apply if you are:
- Studying in the third year or higher of an approved undergraduate programme in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities.
- Already a graduate of an eligible UGC or AICTE approved programme in those fields.
- A medical or agriculture student or graduate, meaning someone in the 5th, 6th or 7th semester or beyond, or someone who has completed M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.V.Sc., or a B.Sc. in Agriculture, Horticulture or Forestry.
Eligibility rules differ slightly by branch and by test paper, so read the section for your own programme in the brochure.
Understanding the exam pattern
GATE 2027 is a computer-based test in English, with 30 test papers. That list includes a new paper, Robotics and Automation.
Every paper has 65 questions worth 100 marks. Ten questions come from General Aptitude, worth 15 marks. The other 55 questions come from your core subject and carry the remaining 85 marks.
Three kinds of questions
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): You pick one correct option. These carry 1 or 2 marks. A wrong answer costs you 1/3 mark on a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark on a 2-mark question.
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): One or more options can be correct. You must select all the right ones to get the marks, because partial answers earn nothing. There is also no penalty for a wrong answer.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): You type the answer using an on-screen keypad. There are no options to guess from, and no negative marking.
This mix has a practical meaning. Since only MCQs have a penalty, you can attempt MSQs and NATs more freely. Keep guessing on MCQs for the ones where you can at least remove two options.
Step-by-step application process
- Open the official application portal at gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
- Register on the GOAPS system with your name, email and mobile number.
- Fill in your candidate profile and education details.
- Choose your test paper and your preferred exam cities.
- Upload your photograph, signature and a valid photo ID.
- If you are claiming a fee concession, upload your category or PwD certificate.
- Pay the fee online.
- Review everything once more, then submit.
- Download and save the confirmation page.
Keep these ready before you start
Have your email and phone number working, since you will get codes and updates there. Keep a scanned photograph and signature in the size and format the portal asks for. Have your photo ID and, if needed, your category certificate saved on your device. Also decide your paper and three or four city choices beforehand so you are not rushing at the last minute.
Mistakes that cause trouble later
- Wrong name or date of birth. These must match your ID. Fixing errors later can be slow or impossible.
- An expired or unclear certificate. If your concession document is rejected, you may lose the lower fee.
- A poor photo upload. Blurry or incorrect images are a common reason for application problems.
- Choosing a paper in a hurry. The paper decides your whole preparation, so pick based on your degree and your goals, not on what friends chose.
What can you do with a GATE score?
A good score can help you get admission to postgraduate programmes with scholarship support. Many public sector companies also use GATE scores to shortlist candidates for jobs, and some other organisations do the same. Each institute or employer sets its own cut-off and rules.
Your score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, which gives you more than one admission or hiring cycle to use it.
Quick answers to common questions
Can I apply offline?
No. The entire process, from registration to payment, happens on the online portal.
Can I attempt GATE in my final year?
Yes, as long as you meet the year or semester requirement for your programme.
Should I take two papers?
Only if the two are closely related and you can prepare for both. Otherwise, one well-prepared paper is the safer choice.
Where can I read the official rules?
The Information Brochure is on the GATE 2027 website: gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
